Oof. Welcome to the madness that is AoE2! The thing is that all strategy games have such a different meta and complexity to them that it's difficult to jump in and say that you'll figure it out. Best case scenario is that you level out to be in the top 1000 players or so once you begin to catch on and then rise from there, if you can devote the First thing or one of the first things I do when I hit castle age is build a town center and my first 200 stone go towards town centers. The more villagers the more resources. Check society stats at the end of the game. 99% of the time opponents with the highest resource gathering also have the highest villager count.
The other one-star civilization in Age of Empires IV is the French. To be fair, the French are a bit tougher to play than the English, focusing more on late-game dominance than early-game survival
