9. Add percussion to your groove. Writing drum beats with percussion can be as subtle as a tambourine hit or as obvious as a cowbell or shaker that takes the place of the hi hat or ride. The tambourine hit can be support of other drums, like the snare, or it can be part of a more linear pattern in relation to the other drums.
Let’s sample some of the most common grooves in a few genres to see the role that each of them predominantly plays: Drum & Bass: kick on beats 1 & 3½; snare on beats 2 and 4. Dubstep: kick on beats 1 & 3; snare on beats 2 and 4. Funk (Swing): kick on beats 1, 1½, 2½, and 3½; snare on beats 2 and 4. Soul: kick on 1; snare on beats 2 and 4.

Step 1: Setup. We start by creating a new MIDI track in our DAW. We’re using Ableton Live but any DAW will work. We program in a melody. We’re actually using chords with Live’s Arpeggiator to generate the individual notes, but you should go with whatever is appropriate for your track.
